William Wright, "Dan De Quille," came west in 1857, and it was in 1859 that news of the silver discoveries along the Comstock took him into the region northeast of Lake Tahoe, an area that was to be his home for nearly forty years. Failing of success as a miner, Wright became a journalist. In 1862 he went to work for the Territorial Enterprise newspaper in Virginia City, and he remained the chief attraction of that remarkable journal until it ceased pulblication in 1893. It was during Wright's first year on the Territorial Enterprise staff that the paper also hired young Sam Clemens, who became Mark Twain the following year. This book chronicles in a first person format, the activities of Wright, Twain and the community of Virginia City during it's bonanza years. Excellent and enjoyable reading. |
