The Red Light Ladies of Virginia City,Nevada by Geo. Williams III
Between1860 and 1882, Virginia City, Nevada, was the largest, richest mining town in the American West. It was comprised mostly of single men, a ration of men to women as high as 8 to 1, never less than 3 to 1. The lack of affordable housing, the hostile environment, the high cost of travel, and the expense of living in Virginia City prevented many man from bringing their wives, girl friends and familes to Virginia City. Hoards of prostitutes and madams came to Virginia City to capitalize on the lack of women. Prostitution was lawfully permitted from 1859 to 1947 when it was outlawed. During these years, hundreds of prostitutes and madams made their livings and died within the Virginia City redlight districts. This book tells of their lives, deaths and legengs basee on newspaper accounts, Federal, State and Storey County records. NF, PB, 48 pgs |
